"New Life" (Depeche Mode cover)

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Nov 4, 2014

It turns out By Divine Right's full-album salute to Depeche Mode's 1981 debut Speak & Spell won't actually be arriving this fall as planned. Bummer though that may be, the band have at least let loose an audio stream of them giving, ahem, new life to the synth-pop crew's "New Life."

More organic than its predecessor, the cover replaces vintage analogue synth-work with fuzz bass, live drums and the in-the-red danger of electric guitar. José Contreras likewise alters the arrangement by swapping Dave Gahan's Brit accent out in favour of his own distortion-dusted vocals.

It isn't entirely generating a new product, but you can catch By Divine Right's cover down below. Their Speak & Spell tribute LP is now expected to land early next year through Headless Owl Records.
