The Burning Hell

"Professional Rappers" (Exclaim! TV x Pinball Sessions)

The alter-ego of Canadian singer-songwriter Mathias Kom, the Burning Hell, wouldn't be pegged by many as a rap music fan. However, the old adage does say to never judge a book by its cover, and his group's latest composition proves that if he was asked to kick it in true hip-hop fashion, he definitely could.

In collaboration with Pinball Sessions, we caught up with Kom and his bandmates in a Peterborough apartment for a performance of "Professional Rappers" taken from an upcoming limited edition seven-inch single.

Lining up alongside clarinetist Ariel Sharrat and guitarist Darren Browne, Kom details the perils of hearing your name in a diss track and suddenly finding yourself as the target of a heated rap rivalry. Smart, subtle references to rap legends such as Jay Z and Snoop Dogg are only elevated with sweet-sounding vocal harmonies from Sharrat and Kom. Peterborough certainly isn't known as a hip-hop hotbed, but the group's steady acoustic tribute deserves some serious street cred.
