Published Jul 25, 2019The music of Bruno Capinan is informed by his artistry, his identity and his worldview. Born in Brazil and based in Toronto, the singer-songwriter's Real is defined by a desire to reflect on the struggles of the queer community, particularly for those of black heritage, in light of the rise of populism and authoritarian regimes across the globe.
Far from a neophyte in the music realm, the artist has honed his craft over the years, and dedicates his tenor vocals and lyricism for LGBTQ youth in Canada, Brazil and elsewhere.
The 12-track album, sung primarily in Portuguese, is dynamic in scope and vibrant in intent: lead single "Tão Perto" is a syncopated electronic soundscape that takes us back to his birth country; the symphonic "Real Agora" flitters and flows as if breathing underwater; and Rubel and Basia Bulat lend vocals on the English-language, acoustic-fuelled "Love's Will."
Bruno Capinan is a politically active and socially conscious individual; Real reveals his craft, composition and outlook in full bloom. (Independent)
