Bruce Before You Sleep

Bruce Before You Sleep
Bruce, otherwise known as Larry McCarthy, relies on industrial textures to manufacture an illustrious and menacing breed of experimental techno. Before You Sleep is a pneumatic followup to the Bristol producer's prolific string of releases in 2016, including his Steals EP via Ben UFO's label, Hessle Audio.

With Before You Sleep, the London based producer evokes the ominous granularity that underscored the appeal of Steals. According to the McCarthy, this EP is "a glimpse into the delirious vacuum of thoughts and weariness induced by habitual insomnia," a notion best exemplified by the pressurized tempos and nocturnal textures throughout the record.

The stereo imaging of this EP is immediately evident in the churning layers of the title track. The shuffling tempo of "In Line" channels vintage UK rave traditions, while "Sweat" evolves from lone, analog sputters into sprays of the aforementioned granular textures, interspersed with clamorous church bell samples.

Before You Sleep fuses industrial percussion with an innovative use of disintegrative effects to produce depth and movement. McCarthy is able to produce a dynamic form of experimental music that is rooted in dance floor traditions, yet erratically disperses itself through texture-driven techniques. Before You Sleep's greatest asset is its impressive stereo imaging. (Hemlock)
