Published Oct 27, 2010Any of you still lamenting the loss of indie power poppers the Broken West can finally dry your eyes. While the group broke up in 2009, head songwriter Ross Flournoy has returned with a new project, Apex Manor, who next year will be releasing their debut disc, The Year of Magical Drinking, via Merge.
While initially Flournoy's post-Broken West time was spent relaxing as a suburbanite at his Pasadena, CA home, a press release for the group explains that eventually days spent gardening and drinking beers on the porch proved to be unsatisfying for Flournoy. Inspired by an NPR contest that challenged songwriters to craft cuts over the course of a weekend, he wrote Apex Manor's first tune, "Under the Gun," which in turn inspired him to write over 25 more songs.
Though Merge has yet to announce which cuts were selected for Apex Manor's first album, the label has announced that the collection will be released January 25.
