Broken Social Scene's Brendan Canning Announces New Solo Album: 'You Gots 2 Chill'

BY Alex HudsonPublished Jul 9, 2013

Broken Social Scene member Brendan Canning has a message for music fans: take a break and relax. He's just announced that his latest solo effort is called You Gots 2 Chill, and it will be out on October 1 through Draper Street Records/SQE.

The album — which shares a title with a 1988 single by hip-hop outfit EPMD — was reportedly tracked in his living room on Draper Street in Toronto. According to a press release, Canning took the solitary route when making the album; this included drawing the cover art (which you can get a glimpse of in the YouTube player below) and recording tracks on voicemail. He even opted to release it on his own Draper Street Records rather than Broken Social Scene's usual Arts & Crafts label.

An announcement encourages listeners to "forget about the time of day and where you need to be." It's only fitting, then, that our first taste of the album is decidedly chilled-out. "Plugged In" is a whispered, Elliott Smith-style folk tune that mixes crackly audio touches with subtle ambient textures. It available to stream instantly via the YouTube player below, or as a download in exchange for an email via the widget.

Judging by the images associated with the record and YouTube stream, the songwriter seems to be going by Brendan J Canning here. This follows his 2012 album with Cookie Duster, When Flying Was Easy.
