Brokeback Return with First New Album in Nearly a Decade

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Nov 6, 2012

It's been almost 10 years since Tortoise member Douglas McCombs offered up new material with his other post-rock project, Brokeback, but a decade of silence is about to come to an end via the release of a new LP called Brokeback and the Black Rock. The album, their first since 2003's Looks at the Bird, will hit store shelves and online retailers January 22 through longtime label home Thrill Jockey.

A press release explains that McCombs began conceptualizing the LP in the fall of 2010 and started off by recruiting a new band made up of himself, Pete Croke (Tight Phantomz, Head of Skulls!, Reds and Blue), Chris Hansen (Pinebender, Head of Skulls!), and James Elkington (the Zincs, the Horse's Ha). After months of practising, they started playing live in September 2011 and ended up opening some dates for their pals the Sea and Cake, which features Tortoise drummer/producer John McEntire.

Brokeback and the Black Rock was tracked last April at McEntire's Soma Electronic Music Studio in Chicago, with overdubs taking place at band member Elkington's home studio NADA. While sound samples have yet to surface from the reportedly reverb-heavy sessions, the press sheet notes that "The bass and drums sound natural and full. The guitars are clear and ringing with just the right growl."
