Brendan Philip Unveils Debut EP

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Apr 7, 2015

Toronto R&B crooner Brendan Philip has performed alongside artists like Bilal, Shad, M.I.A. and BADBADNOTGOOD, but he's stepping into the spotlight to reveal plans for his debut EP. The self-titled, five-song offering will arrive on May 12 via Fake Art/Dine Alone Records.

It was recorded at Dreamhouse and Acres YYZ, and was co-produced by friend and collaborator Jahmal Padmore, Toronto MC Keita Juma, and Philip himself.

A press release notes that Philip draws his inspiration from a wide range of artists and genres, listening to and absorbing the rich musical histories of everyone from Outkast to David Byrne, as well as collectives like Sun Ra Arkestra and Parliament Funkadelic.

In anticipation of the release, Philip has unveiled a new track called "Shadow Ceremony." Showing off a sound that weaves between genres, he serves up soulful vocals with groove-filled ambient beats — a sound as diverse as the city he hails from.
