Brasstronaut

'Mean Sun' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished May 8, 2012

Following Brasstronaut's successful debut album, 2010's Mt. Chimaera, which netted them the ECHO Songwriting Prize and a Polaris Music Prize nomination, the jazz-influenced Vancouver ensemble are ready to release their sophomore LP, Mean Sun. While the album won't be out until May 15 through Unfamiliar Records, you can listen to the entire full-length effort right now at Exclaim.ca.

The collection was recorded at the Hive with producer Colin Stewart, who has previously worked with well-known Vancouverites like Dan Mangan and Black Mountain. What they came up with diverges from the band's previous style; unlike their usual, straightforward blend of jazz, pop and rock, the new songs rely heavily on a laid-back and heady mix of processing and electronics.

Listen to the stunning results below, which may just surprise more than a few listeners.

And if you're curious to hear how this material translates live, be sure to check out the band's upcoming Canadian tour dates right here.
