Braid Announce 'Closer to Closed' EP

Back in January, beloved '90s Midwestern emo troupe Braid announced that they had reunited to record a twelve-inch of new material. While the band had previously got back together for a tour in 2004, the proposed tunes would have been the first Braid songs released since the two-volume odds'n'sods Movie Music compilations came out in 2000. Now, the band have finally detailed that upcoming EP.

According to a press release, the Closer to Closed EP is due August 16 on longtime label Polyvinyl Records. The original idea, conceived in April 2010, was to put together something for this year's Record Store Day, which clearly didn't happen. Sounds as if the spark was still there once the quartet got back together with producer J. Robbins, who recorded their last full-length, 1998's Frame and Canvas.

"We knew we wanted to record with J from the very beginning," guitarist/vocalist Bob Nanna said in a statement. "Being in the studio with him felt like we were just picking up where Frame and Canvas ended."

Like that album, the new EP is said to crackle with energy. The four-song affair kicks off with co-vocalist Chris Broach's sweetly sung emo pop number "The Right Time," which you can download here, and features a cover of Jeff Hanson's "You Are the Reason."

While there are no immediate plans to record a full-length, the band are apparently "open to the idea."

"I felt like how I feel every time a project is finished," Nanna said of wrapping up Closer to Closed. "When can we start writing more songs? I'd love to do another record."
