Brad Goode Tight Like This

This, the 12th album from Chicago, IL-based jazz trumpeter/composer Goode, is a strong one. The skilled quartet have a Canadian connection, in the form of Toronto, ON pianist Adrean Ferrugia, and his tasteful playing is showcased nicely here (he also arranged closing tune "Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise"). Goode adds contemporary twists to such standards as the title cut, "Changes" and "Reverse the Charges," and he comes up with some impressive original compositions to match his fluent, varied trumpet work (his playing on Irving Berlin's "Reaching for the Moon" is an album highlight). "Summary" is a tribute to friend, mentor and sax great Eddie Harris, while "Bob's Bounce" is a hard-bop tribute to label head, and CD producer, Bob Koester. Goode stuff, indeed. (Delmark)
