Published Jul 29, 2010Earlier this month, we confirmed that the out-of-leftfield collaboration between Japanese experimental oddballs Boris and the Cult's Ian Astbury is indeed for real. Now, the collaborators, who are going under the name BXI, have given their self-titled four-song EP the official release date of August 17.
The artwork (see above) for the release was designed by Sunn O)))'s Stephen O'Malley. As previously reported, the disc is composed of three originals, plus a cover of the Cult's "Rain," sung by Boris guitarist Wata. It will be out on CD on twelve-inch vinyl via Southern Lord.
According to a press release, the collaborators are planning on taking this studio project to the stage sometime in the next few months. So far there is only one confirmed date - September 7 in New York City, where BXI will perform alongside Boris and Sunn O)))'s joint project, Altar. But more dates are expected to be announced in the coming months. What's more, there may even be a follow-up record.
Astbury recently joined Boris on stage in Sydney to perform a cover of the Doors' "The End." Check it out in the embedded video below. Before the song, Astbury calls the Japanese rockers "Probably the most important band doing the most important work in the world today."
