Bonnie "Prince” Billy Distracted by Even Newer Songs
Just as Bonnie "Prince” Billy should be basking in the glow of the grand achievement that is his newest album, he’s already moved on to his next collection of songs. Released on May 20, Lie Down in the Light has prompted Will Oldham to start touring again after a long spell off the road. To prep for the trek, he’s been rehearsing and going through material that he himself hasn’t touched in almost a year.

"I’m just starting to re-inhabit these songs since recording them last fall,” Oldham told Exclaim! earlier this month. "I just had a rehearsal where I sang one of these songs for the first time since then. I spent this last year not playing any shows and living in this national park for the last few months. I had time to put together new songs and have completely put any connection to these Lie Down in the Light songs on hold in favour of these new songs. Now I’ll get back into Lie Down in the Light and, when this trip is done, I’ll record these new songs. My head is definitely more into these new songs than those, but that will change in the next week. Right now, the best I can do is subconsciously tuck a record away for days, months, and years at a time and pretend it doesn’t exist.”

For fans hoping to hear some of the stunning tunes from Lie Down in the Light when the "Prince” goes on tour, rest assured that he’s on the case. "Prior to this practice last night, I was thinking, ‘Gosh, I don’t even know any of these songs anymore,’” Oldham admits. "’I don’t remember how they go at all or any of the words,’ and then last night, it was no problem at all. I knew them completely — just second nature, to the extent that there was melodic exploration going on.”
