Bocce

"Demonstration Sport Bronze Medalist"

Waterloo, ON isn't the first place I think of when it comes to fertile music scenes, so forgive me K-W if I'm surprised to find a band to feature in Click Hear. But from their beautifully international sporting name to the high energy they use in their music, I'm finding this particular ignorance of mine to be bliss.

I regretfully missed Bocce this past Saturday (November 8) when they opened for Matt & Kim, along with Best Fwends, at the Whippersnapper space here in Toronto, but judging by Matt's enthusiasm, I can imagine how they tore up the relatively close quarters of the venue with their brand of aggressive, fist-pumpin' electro pop punk.

Lifted from their newly released ... Should Be An Olympic Sport, which I must point is "available at shows and streaming on Myspace / Facebook" with a "free download likely available soon," the thematically appropriate "Demonstration Sport Bronze Medalist" comes out of the gates like a 50-yard dash gold medal race (pity they came in third). It reminds me a little of two over-stimulated dance acts — Toronto's Opopo and the now sadly missed Danes Junior Senior — thanks to the heavily mixed bpms, the '80s-flavoured hyper chopping rhythm and the fervent vocals. The perfect song to instill that Olympic rush into any athlete.
