Blur's Alex James in BBC Doc About Colombian Cocaine Trade

BY Brock ThiessenPublished Aug 20, 2008

Blur bassist and former coke fiend turned cheese farmer Alex James is set to star in a new documentary titled Cocaine Diaries: Alex James in Colombia. The BBC America film follows James — who "once bragged that he spent over a million pounds on cocaine at the height of his addiction" — to the source of his former addiction, Colombia, which now accounts for 62 percent of the world’s cocaine production and names the drug as the country’s top export, the BBC tells us.

According to the press release, James was invited by the country’s president, Alvaro Uribe, to "better understand the origins and human cost of cocaine... from riding shotgun with a drug kingpin's assassin to venturing deep into the rainforest to watch coca leaves being harvested and turned into narcotics."

In the release, James says, "It's a long way from a cheeky line at a dinner party. It's terrifying."

And to see just how terrifying it actually is, you can tune in to Cocaine Diaries: Alex James in Colombia when it premiers September 3 on BBC America. (Or just watch it below via YouTube.)
