Blue Öyster Cult

Spectres/Some Enchanted Evening

The two latest additions to Legacy’s ongoing Blue Oyster Cult remastered series, these two albums came out right in the middle of the band’s most successful era as full-blown arena rockers. Spectres is probably best-known for the band’s gargantuan hit "Godzilla,” but in reality it was the band’s turning point from being poorly produced Black Sabbath clones to becoming a more commercial hard rock band. The best song here is the previously unreleased take at the ’60s classic "Be My Baby,” which must be heard to be believed. Some Enchanted Evening was the band’s second live album, a curious effort that was delivered only two albums after the much superior On Your Feet or On Your Knees. Although it is one of their best selling releases it is a watered-down version of what the band were then capable of. This comes to light with the superior bonus tracks that expand the single album to nearly 80 minutes of music and include showstoppers like "Harvester of Eyes” and "ME 262.” The real attraction here, however, is the bonus live DVD. Filmed at the Capital Center in Maryland in 1977, the quality isn’t up to today’s standards but it is a fantastic document of a band at the top of their game in front of tens of thousands of adoring fans.
