Blanck Mass

'Dumb Flesh' (album stream)

This year, Fuck Buttons are working on their own projects. Andrew Hung already released an EP under his own name, and now Benjamin John Power is rolling out a new album with his Blanck Mass side-project. Dumb Flesh drops next week (May 12) on Sacred Bones, and it can be streamed in full right now.

The album is inspired by the frailty and flaws of the human body. Power said in a statement, "We are at the mercy of our genetic heritage every day. No matter how intelligent we are compared to other life forms, we're still made up of the same building blocks and things can go very wrong."

The album is a very abstract interpretation of these themes: opener "Loam" is a weirdo backmasked experiment, while most of the rest of the tracks consist of clattering grooves and sprawling instrumental dance epics. Finally, the album closes with "Detritus," which shifts from noisy squall to cinematic crescendo to soft, blippy comedown.
