It took Carey Mercer three years to put together his last jaw-dropping Blackout Beach album Fuck Death, but just a few months after its late fall release, the West Coast singer-songwriter has returned with a primarily instrumental follow-up called 11 Pink Helicopters in the Coral Sky.
"I made another record! Give your ears a galactic massage, and pay-what-u-can," he tweeted of the collection, which is currently available on Bandcamp.
While Mercer's signature warble is missing from all but closing "Pink Helicopters," the 11-song outing features the same kind of hypnotic, minimalist guitar and electronics blends that surfaced on Fuck Death, though these new cuts play a little more tranquil.
Highlights include the buzzing, backwards-masked six-strings on "Hypnagogic Blue," the early 4AD dream pop of "Sign of Harry" and the gentle piping on atmospheric new age number "The Magical Flute."
