Black Walls

"Mary of the Shrines"

BY Alan RantaPublished Jul 5, 2013

Under the name Black Walls, Toronto musical experimenter Kenneth Reaume has opened for the likes of Six Organs of Admittance, Fucked Up and MV&EE. These credentials give a clear context for "Mary of the Shrines," the title track from his upcoming cassette, due out July 19 on Pleasence Records.

This track is a sprawling drone-folk epic with black metal and post-rock tendencies, moving from aggressive electric guitar soloing over unhurried drums to murky sampling, potent finger picking and delayed vocals, and then back again. Like the bands Black Walls has supported, this track bridges the gap between seemingly disparate genres in an experimental yet accessible fashion.

This cassette is a precursor to Reaume's second full-length album as Black Walls. No release date or title has been set for the album yet, but you can stream "Mary of the Shrines" right now below.
