Black Mountain Announce Wilderness Heart

BY Stephen CarlickPublished Jun 8, 2010

The members of Vancouver, BC retro rock quintet Black Mountain have kept busy with a number of side-projects since their 2008 effort, In the Future, but hardcore fans will be pleased to know that they are returning to their day job following today's announcement that the band's third album will drop this fall.

Black Mountain will release their anticipated Wilderness Heart on September 14, courtesy of Outside Music in Canada and Jagjaguwar in the U.S. The album will see a UK release a day earlier.

Wilderness Heart was recorded in Los Angeles, Seattle and Vancouver, and was produced by both D. Sardy (Nine Inch Nails, LCD Soundsystem, Spoon) and Sunn O)))/Boris veteran Randall Dunn in equal measure. The cover, which is once again by Black Mountain synth master Jeremy Schmidt, and which we couldn't possibly reduce to mere words, is visible above.

In a recent interview with Exclaim!, head Black Mountaineer Stephen McBean revealed a few juicy details about the disc, including that the album will be more concise than previous albums, and that it will be "more vocally-focused than riff-focused." He added that "this one's probably going to be ten songs - standard one record." The full interview can be perused here.

The album's first single, "Old Fangs," is available for download here for the price of an email, but fans looking for a more thorough preview might be interested in checking the band out on their upcoming tour of North America and Europe. The band will trek through Western Canada in June before stopping in Ontario twice in July. All dates are below.
