Black Lips, No Age, GZA and More To Play North By Northeast
The programming for this year's North By Northeast was announced last night (May 11) at a press conference held at Mill Street Brewery in Toronto's Distillery District. The five-day festival will run from June 17 to 21 and will feature 500 bands performing at various venues throughout the city, as well as film screenings and conference workshops.

Andy McLean, managing director of NXNE, stated some of the 2009's attractions, which includes a main stage at Yonge-Dundas Square. Toronto's experimental rockers Black Hat Brigade will be performing at NXNE for their second year and are set to take part in a Yonge-Dundas Square show on June 19.

"We've only played an outdoor show once, so the Yonge-Dundas Square thing is going to be a lot of fun," said vocalist/bassist Robert Haughey. Also for NXNE, Black Hat Brigade will be performing on June 18 at the Drake Hotel. "We love festivals, we're looking forward to the Drake show a lot," Haughey said. "We have a lot of friends in the other bands playing NXNE, so we'll have a really good time."

McLean also announced that for the festival's 15th year many of the venues will be extending their hours. "28 of our 50 venues will be going until 4:00 a.m. last call," he said. "Also this year passes are only $50 for all five days; it's amazing."

Toronto newcomers Dinosaur Bones will be performing at NXNE on June 19 at the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern. The indie rock band's vocalist/guitarist Ben Fox said he's excited to be playing NXNE for the first time. "This is what we want to be doing; we want to play festivals as much as possible," he said. "I think it's great to be able to run around town and see all sorts of great bands."

The 500 performances by Canadian and international acts will include the likes of the Black Lips, No Age, Matt and Kim, the Cool Kids, Crystal Antlers, Dillinger Four, D-Sisive, GZA, the Homosexuals, Mika Miko, Melissa Auf Der Maur, the Sonics, Spiral Beach, Wintersleep, Youth Brigade and a reunited Change of Heart.
