Billy Mahonie The Big Dig

With the number of instrumental guitar bands seemingly growing exponentially at the moment, you’d think that writing lyrics was going out of fashion. The latest addition to that list is UK band Billy Mahonie, a group who have someone how managed to carve out an almost unique sound amidst a scene where bands sometime seem interchangeable. Billy Mahonie have followed the path carved by Tortoise and other Chicago bands (rather than Mogwai’s Slint-influenced journey), but they have retained a tendency to sound more like a rock band than you would expect. There are some moments of real intricacy with delicate melodies being picked out on a guitar, but it could never be called ambient. And best of all, they know when to stop — nine tracks fly by in a mere 40 minutes. Perhaps the real secret to success is knowing when to shut up. (Too Pure)
