Billy the Kid

The Lost Cause

BY Amanda AshPublished Feb 9, 2009

Despite the title of her new five-track EP, Billy The Kid is not a lost cause. In fact, she's far from it. The BC folk artist has been omnipresent in the music scene for quite some time now but The Lost Cause is going to push her even further into the main stage spotlight. The record, produced by Raine Maida, shines from every angle. Brilliant, catchy folk melodies combine with a bonafide passion for songwriting, leaving us with a handful of songs so pure and elemental it's hard to believe they came from a young bespectacled girl with punky hair. The trudging pace of "These City Lights" hooks you right from the first drumbeat, while "Drown" features Billy's rousing vocals and melancholy lyrics. The Lost Cause is a great release from a great Canadian artist. Maybe next time she'll serve up more than five tracks because I'm already starving for more.
