Bil Hetherington and the Asian Tigers Through The Sunspots

Bil Hetherington is best known as the lead singer of long-running Calgary garage combo the Neckers. With his Asian Tigers, however, Hetherington has toned things down significantly, playing dreamy indie pop that keeps it slow and relatively quiet. As demonstrated on Through The Sunspots, the band’s debut record, this is far from a bad thing. Opener "Anytime, Anywhere” pairs a soft Mellotron and comforting harmonies with Hetherington’s soft-spoken heartbreak, while "How Long” builds a sobering melody from a strummed Rickenbacker. Through The Sunspots is both a worthwhile debut and a demonstration of Hetherington’s versatility as a songwriter. (Independent)
