Big Brave Detail Southern Lord Debut 'Au De La'

Following last spring's announcement that Montreal post-rock trio Big Brave had signed to the venerable Southern Lord imprint for an upcoming release, the band have now offered up the details behind their label debut. The record is called Au De La, and it pours into retailers September 18.

While album details were slim when the signing announcement was made last May, it had previously been revealed that Big Brave recorded this latest LP at Montreal's Hotel2Tango facility with producer Efrim Menuck (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra). A press release now notes that the album features five songs that juxtapose "force and restraint," balancing "passages of rhythmic noise pollution" with "vocal led awe."

While the band's arrangements often play out via two guitars and a drum set, they've also tapped Silver Mt. Zion string player Jessica Moss to add violin to various pieces.

Big Brave have also revealed in a statement that they relish being with Southern Lord for the release of Au De La, noting how the imprint has given them creative freedom.

They wrote: "With a label that has put out so many innovative and genre-defying records and a pronounced supporter of experimental heavy music, as a band and sound creators, our sonic exploration and experimentation can only continue to flourish. All possible pressures of limitations abolished, we feel honored, inspired and the future is bright."

While none of the songs are being streamed in full, you can sample a bit of Au De La in a newly revealed album trailer. You'll find its mix of murky ambiance and blistering distortion beneath the full-length's tracklisting info.
