Montreal-based post-rock unit Big Brave are nearly ready to return with their sophomore album Au De La, but before it lands next month, Exclaim! is pleased to premiere the new track "On the By and By and Thereon."
The album marks the first for the experimental trio on Southern Lord, whom they signed with earlier this year. As previously reported, it hears the band working with producer Efrim Menuck (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra) and was recorded at Hotel2Tango in Montreal.
Typically consisting of two guitars and a drumkit, the band accentuated their sinister sound with Silver Mt. Zion string player Jessica Moss for some of the upcoming tracks.
"On the By and By and Thereon" opens with dark, distorted start-and-stop guitar and drum pattern before the vocals kick in, adding another layer of dramatic flair. Following a dramatic pause midway through the song, things settle back into spellbinding repetition before an ominous outro brings it to a gloomy end.
