From the Thrasher Skate Rock compilations in the '80s, to the Warped Tour's '90s skate punk salad days and Odd Future's recent exploits, it seems skateboarding and music have gone hand-in-hand for as long as we can remember. It comes as no surprise then to learn that Dragonslayer, a new documentary about the wild and crazy life of street surfer Josh "Skreech" Sandoval, will be complemented by a soundtrack featuring Best Coast, Thee Oh Sees, Real Estate and more.
Kemado and Mexican Summer will issue the Dragonslayer soundtrack, though a release date has yet to be confirmed. Bands set to appear also include Death, the Soft Pack, Jacuzzi Boys and Children. You can check the full tracklisting, which is heavily weighted towards Thee Oh Sees, down below.
If you're out on the West Coast, you can catch a couple of screenings of Dragonslayer at the upcoming Vancouver International Film Festival. The documentary on the 23-year-old California native is said to take "the viewer through a golden SoCal haze of lost youth, broken homes and abandoned swimming pools." You can check the screening details below.
"I met Skreech at a party in an abandoned airfield off the I-10 in Chino, California right after our country's economic collapse," director Tristan Patterson said of his subject in a statement. "He had a lime-green mohawk and was wearing a matching Screamers T-shirt in honour of the L.A. punk band that never recorded an album. He looked malnourished and lost, and claimed he was on five tabs of acid. It was impossible to talk to him; his head was lost in the clouds. Then I saw him skate."
Dragonslayer will receive a few small runs in the U.S. starting November 4, with plans to be distributed in wider release sometime in the future. It will be the second film, behind Harmony Korine's Trash Humpers, to be distributed by Drag City.
