Benny Golson Tune In, Turn On

Tune In, Turn On “to the hippest commercials of the sixties” is what this collection of space age jazz pop asks you to do, and while you may not remember (I don’t) the pitches that accompanied the tunes, you might be surprised at just how much Esquivel was being beamed directly into our parents’ brains. Catchy and direct are the requirements; full orchestras, vibes, strings and backing “la la la” vocals are the means; and none of these pass the three minute mark. Verve missed the boat, though, by not reissuing this at the height of the lounge craze, which has (thankfully) passed us by. (Verve)
