Published Jun 03, 2015Alabama-born, Atlanta-based troubadour and "dive-bar philosopher" Ben Trickey is almost ready to release the fourth and final 7-inch single in a series that he's been rolling out over the last four years. The full set lands as a hand-made limited-edition box set on June 9, but before it arrives, Exclaim! has got the premiere of the latest A-side "Alabama."
According to a press release, the new song contrasts a sonically painted picture of "stark rural imagery" with "a nostalgia for unburdened youth." That feeling is conveyed through Trickey's acoustic guitar and twangy, heartfelt vocals, with accordion and violin accompaniments adding in some extra interest.
And although his music is often interpreted as down-in-the-dumps balladry about life's lower points, the singer doesn't see it that way.
"I think that all my songs are written from the perspective of loving life and then trying to make sense of the tragedy of it," he said in a statement. "I think they're all written from the viewpoint of looking up versus falling into it. Hopefully."
The new box set arrives next week, but you can get an exclusive first listen to the latest A-side in the singles collection by giving "Alabama" a spin in the player below, right now.
