Belladonna

Housin' Paradise

BY Prasad BidayePublished Sep 1, 1999

Housin' Paradise is like a collection of cheap perfume. The tracks are airy enough to arouse the senses, but when taken in excess, they're likely to induce a bad headache. Obscure disco samples and Brazilian loops make Belladonna funkier than most, but the weight of his soundscapes is just too heavy. The energy in the beats sounds somewhat paralysed, devoid of both motion and emotion. There are some pretty atmospheres, like on "Stellar Haze" or "Psycho Rhodes," but not enough to express a strong personality. In some ways, this may be the future sound of exotica lounge music, but with a heavier groove.
