Published Oct 24, 2013Guided By Voices drummer Kevin Fennell's plan to sell his historic drum kit for $55,000 didn't exactly go according to plan. Not only did the auction end without a single bid, the whole ordeal may have got him kicked out of the band.
In an official statement, the band wrote that Fennell is no longer a member of GBV. The statement reads, "For the record, the band Guided By Voices has nothing to do with the sale of Kevin Fennell's drums. He is acting on his own and is no longer in the band."
An heated email exchange posted on a Facebook page for the auction suggests that GBV leader Robert Pollard fired Fennell over the incident. In this back-and-forth, Pollard allegedly wrote, "There was simply a statement and observation by all, and you don't realize how many, that you have made a fool of yourself by your asking price."
He added that Fennell should have asked his permission before using Guided By Voices as a selling point for the drums.
The venomous email continues, "You can call it resigning if you want but you were already fired. I've been wanting to do that for a long time. You're an amateur, you play too fast (which is the sign of an amateur)."
He further called Fennell "a rude, opinionated and insufferable individual," adding, "Do not delude yourself, Kevin, that people gave a shit who was behind that drum kit."
Of course, we can't confirm with absolute certainty that this email exchange is real or that Pollard wrote that email. The Facebook page appears to be legit — it was created back in August, before news of the auction circulated, and includes apparently original quotes from Fennell — so make of it what you will. Go here to read the nasty exchange.
GBV will release their Motivational Jumpsuit LP sometime in February.
