Beauty To Ashes

Reproduce the Common Practice

BY Greg PrattPublished May 1, 2003

Beauty To Ashes have managed to put a new spin on the metalcore genre here, and for that they deserve a hearty round of applause. Mysterious one though, this short disc filled with different sounds, genre-jumping with reckless abandon and usually pleasant results. It doesn't always work, such as on the pop punk/metalcore ditty "Candle Apple Smile," or the filler Misfits cover that ends off the proceedings. But when they're playing a heavy, scathing hardcore it works well, and it works even better when they bring out the melodies and turn the songs into fist-shaking anthems. Kinda confusing little release here, but fishing through the oddities will bring some rewards.
