Published Jun 23, 2009Every Canadian city needs a kick-ass summer music festival, and last year Victoria, B.C. got Rifflandia. The roster for 2008 included Canadian indie darlings Black Mountain and Final Fantasy alongside U.S. acts like Man Man, the Whigs and Blitzen Trappen.
Well, this year, the second annual Rifflandia just got a little more kick-ass. Organizers recently announced the fest, held from September 24 to 27, will feature the likes of Beach House, Pink Mountaintops, Tegan and Sara, Buck 65, Holy Fuck, Champion, Mother Mother, Shad, Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band and the return of Final Fantasy, with more to be announced in the coming weeks.
"We're definitely still confirming artists of all levels," promoter Nick Blasko told Exclaim! in an interview. "We just confirmed Vancouver's Fan Death a moment ago."
According to Blasko, the response from local music fans to the line-up announcement has been amazing so far. "We're really happy to get out of the gates so early," says Blasko, who hopes for even better turnouts this year. "Victorians seem ready to accept the concept now, too."
Similar to 2008's multi-venue festival, this year's event will also allow music fans to hop between a host of downtown Victoria clubs. The festival will also feature a Rifflandia Drama Club and an official magazine/guide book.
Also coinciding with Rifflandia this year will be the fourth edition of Transmission, a music and digital media conference. The industry get-together at Victoria's Crystal Gardens centre will address the future of the global music economy.
A limited amount of early bird festival wristbands are on sale until July 14 at Ticket Web. A full schedule and line-up will be announced on July 15 to coincide with general ticket sales.
