The Baseball Project

"Panda and the Freak"

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Oct 28, 2010

The last time we heard from the Baseball Project, the group were touting the accomplishments of the Minnesota Twins. Well, we're not sure if you guys have been paying attention to the World Series, but let's just say that that particular anthem didn't exactly rally the team to the top this year. In an attempt to be more topical, the sports-minded musicians — Scott McCaughey (R.E.M., the Minus 5, Young Fresh Fellows), Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate, Steve Wynn & the Miracle 3), Peter Buck (R.E.M.) and Linda Pitmon (Steve Wynn & the Miracle 3, Smack Dab, Golden Smog) — give a shout out to current National League champs the San Francisco Giants on the newly leaked "Panda and the Freak."

Showcasing an astounding knowledge of America's favourite past time, the jangly surf rock number slides into verses explaining the nicknames of Giants players Tim Lincecum and Pablo Sandoval. Considering the Giants' win last night (October 27), this number is probably playing all over the Bay Area right now, but how about a little love for us Texas Rangers fans? You sure you guys don't have something about Nolan Ryan in your songbook?

You can give a listen to "Panda and the Freak" below and buy it over at iTunes. The song will be one of many heavy hitters on the band's upcoming Yep Roc Records release Vol. 2: High and Inside, which will be released sometime in February.
