White is Pure 2

BY Joshua OstroffPublished Jun 1, 2003

On first listen, the politically incorrect side of me thought, "wow, this is the gayest thing I have ever heard.” Then, after discovering that White is Pure was a mix-disc tie-in to Montreal’s annual spring-themed, gay-oriented Bal en Blanc (White Party), I realised I was merely astute. Still, it’s a bit of a departure for Misstress Barbara — operating under her alter ego Barbara Brown — who trades in the pummelling techno that made her a global icon for a lighter shade of house. As per her other mixes, Babs includes a few of her own productions (the great Latin-house numbers "So Then?” and "Prendimi”) alongside an array of underground names like Vic Vegas, Kaskade, Onionz and Master D. Unsurprisingly, the selection and mixing is top-notch. But once it moves from the early Latin stuff into disco vocal terrain you’ll realise that gay house sounds even cheesier at home then it does on the circuit.
