Baker Marshall Duo

Chiaroscuro

BY Roman SokalPublished Mar 1, 2002

Recorded at the Music Gallery in Toronto in 2000, renowned ultra-improv duo Thomas Baker (piano) and Kye Marshall (cello) penetrate silence and normality with seemingly subdued yet powerful tinkles of musical notes. What could quite possibly be the source of this phenomenon is that Marshall also has functioned as a music psychotherapist, using the listening of music as a tool for transcending the mind and the (hopeful) resolution of any mental issues. It is amazing to know this type of avant-garde music is completely improvised, as the feel seems structured, yet technically the notes seem the opposite. Hence multiple listens provide different experiences, from relaxing to obscure jazz to pleasing classical enthusiasts with a grand composition, and is for those who like their music indefinable and highly open for interpretation.
