Baby Control

Best Wars

BY Josiah HughesPublished Jul 31, 2007

Boasting a line-up that includes members of the Red Light Sting, North of America and the Buzzing Bees, Vancouver’s Baby Control have been involved long enough to know what they’re doing without subscribing to archaic rules. Recorded in their practice space, with Zoë Verkuylen’s vocals blasting through a broken P.A., Best Wars covers everything, from Lightning Bolt-esque noise rock on "Gun Face” to anthemic indie rock on the title track. With no bass, the interplay of Dan Tompkins and Mark Colavecchia’s guitars does more than enough to fill all the gaps, while Chris Vanderlaan’s drumming shines through despite the lo-fi production. Addictively melodic and gloriously messy, Best Wars is as badass as it is charming.
