Augury

Concealed

BY Laura TaylorPublished Dec 1, 2004

Concealed begins with misleading meekness but before too many seconds have elapsed Augury makes it clear that this band takes no prisoners. Mixing death metal and black metal with classical, progressive folk and an array of other musical styles, Augury’s most consistent and powerful contrast lies in the opposition of vastly dissimilar textures to create an ominous yet mesmerising atmosphere. Thematically, Concealed blends philosophy and science fiction, subject matter conveyed through the album’s artwork as well. Despite the brief moments when melody and ambience hold sway over brutality, Augury’s debut album offers little chance to relax and grow complacent, for every breath is merely the prelude to another onslaught that lies just around the next bend.
