Published Jan 27, 2014Following a pair of cryptic video teasers last week, At the Gates have confirmed that a reunion album is on the way. Titled At War with Reality, the Swedish melodic death metal unit's first album in nearly twenty years will arrive later in 2014 through new label home Century Media.
A press release from the Gothenburg-bred act notes that while some studio-minded footage appeared in the trailers, which you can see down below, they will officially begin tracking their next LP sometime around June or July of this year. The plan is to have the record, their first since 1995's Slaughter of the Soul, out in the fall.
The outfit added that they've experienced some "life-changing reunion tours and shows" since getting back together in 2007, and while they had previously called into question the longevity of the reunion and the possibility of a new album, "things change, situations change and people change."
"What we learned from the last couple of years hanging out and playing shows together is that we enjoy what we do to the fullest extent," the group wrote. "We love playing music together, and we love to hang out as friends. But, as a musician, we constantly write new music. It's a huge part of our identities."
Though track details have yet to surface, guitarist Anders Björler apparently got the ball rolling on the project last summer, and they've been working on a batch of songs ever since. The new tunes are said to mix the early style of At the Gates with the speedy, melodic edge of Slaughter of the Soul.
At the Gates added: "When Anders sent the first song last summer, we had zero expectations of the outcome. We only knew one thing — that it sounded amazing! At the time we weren't even sure there would be an album, but as things progressed, more songs came into existence, and we knew we were on to something great."
While Slaughter of the Soul was released by Earache back in the '90s, At War with Reality will be their first for Century Media. The label fit is a natural one, considering bassist Jonas Björler and drummer Adrian Erlandsson are in a working relationship with Century Media with their other project, the Haunted.
