Arsonists Get All The Girls

Motherland

BY Keith CarmanPublished May 17, 2011

Three years after tertiary album Portals drew admirable attention to this Californian deathcore outfit, Arsonists Get All The Girls finally manage to issue fourth work Motherland. That is, in one piece, seeing as it started filtering out via the band's various networking sites months ago. Hearing its entirety, it's no wonder they opted to do a bit of piecework introduction. Not only is it another round of "same old, same old" but when those annoying keyboards on tunes such as "Dr. Teeth" start wanking away, it's a wonder who could appreciate a band struggling so hard to meld death metal with prog rock. From the annoying screeching to the overproduction and an obvious case of Converge-itis compounded by acute As I Lay Dying, much of this album is nowhere near as bombastic as previous affairs. As well, its grasping for odd timing and part/part/part relay won't be very entertaining to anyone other than people who pretend to prefer the cerebral over good grooves.
