Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti

"Can't Hear My Eyes"

BY Cam LindsayPublished Jan 1, 2010

The Click Hear crew will be taking a break for the next two weeks, but you shouldn't let that stop you from swinging by this spot to (re)discover some of our favourite tracks from the past year. There's no real rhyme or reason behind these picks; they're just the songs that have helped to soundtrack the last 12 months for us. Enjoy and have a happy holidays.

Just the other day, Alan McGee was blogging about how he thinks Animal Collective are the new Hall & Oates, and in the rant he went on about how much Ariel Pink's new single also sounded a lot like the blue-eyed, soulful Philadelphians. Well, that's all it really takes to get me listening and I've got to say that the former Creation Records head honcho is bang on. "Can't Hear My Eyes" continues that smooth, fuzz-free bit of lo-fi experimentation that he and Haunted Graffiti have been exploring as of late, but boy does he ever evoke the soft sounds of yachting here. Here's his take on his new vision:

Hello, friend. My name is Ariel Pink. You've probably read my name online somewhere, maybe your best friend burned you some of my older records, or perhaps you even think we've met at some time in the past. Baloney! Everything you think you know is WRONG - DEAD WRONG. THIS is me, naked, without the buffer of awful tape noise drowning out any lack of vision.

Unfortunately, this puppy sold out pretty quickly back when it was released with "Evolution's A Lie" on limited vinyl through the Mexican Summer label. But hopefully it will pop up on his next full-length, which I am now all of a sudden anticipating impatiently.

P.S. If you're in the Vancouver area, go see him do this live at the Media Club on March 21.
