Aquila

Imperium

BY Denise FalzonPublished Feb 12, 2010

Featuring former members of Bloodshoteye, Windsor, ON's Aquila have gone where many have gone before. The recent metal scene has been bombarded with an onslaught of metalcore bands and unfortunately, Aquila are yet another to join the masses. Although the sub-genre has its moments of innovation and truly talented bands who know their way around a breakdown or ten, Aquila don't happen to be one of them. Their full-length debut, Imperium, is nothing that hasn't been heard a million times before. Even tracks such as "Killed or Be Killed" and "Bound For Glory," which happen to be two of the album's strongest tunes, contain conventional riffs and song structures that are utterly predictable. Although the band members show clear effort in their work and are instrumentally competent, Imperium is unoriginal and unimpressive; it's been done to death.
