Don't Worry, Lorde and Taylor Swift Are Still Totally BFFs

One of pop music's best friendships doesn't seem to be as strong as Instagram would have us believe. In a new interview, Lorde claims that she "doesn't hang out" with Taylor Swift.

Appearing on Sunrise, the New Zealand-born singer was asked how she feels about getting to rub shoulders with "heroes" like Swift and Beyoncé since shooting to fame herself.

"The second you think too hard about it, you just start to go insane. So it's best to just be like, 'We're in wonderland, and that's just what happens around here,'" she said. But then she added, "Like, also, I don't hang out with these people at all."

The interview pressed her, specifically asking about her role as a steadfast member of Swift's squad. Lorde laughed and rolled her eyes, then said, "You know, you make friends in different places, but I think for the most part I'm not, like, calling my idols for advice necessarily."

UPDATE (7/7, 9 p.m. EDT): Lorde has weighed in on the drama, confirming that she is still, in fact, besties with Swift. She took to Twitter to assure followers that "Taylor is a dear friend," and that it was "really shitty to wake up to headlines about whether or not you've jumped ship on someone you deeply respect and ride for."

Lorde, forgive us our sins.

The interview response initially came as a surprise, given that Swift brought Lorde out during her "1989 World Tour," threw her a well-documented 20th birthday party back in November (complete with a handmade birthday card), and even broke her recent social media silence to praise Melodrama's lead single "Green Light."

Last month, though, cracks started to show in the BFF-ship when Lorde caused a bit of controversy by describing her friendship with Swift as "like having a friend with an autoimmune disease." She told The Guardian: "There are certain places you can't go together. Certain things you can't do. There are these different sets of considerations within the friendship."
