Annie

"Russian Kiss" (video)

Russia's anti-gay laws have been a source of ongoing controversy in the lead-up to the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, and Norwegian pop singer Annie has joined the outcry with a song called "Russian Kiss."

The track, which is out through Totally Records, is a thudding dance pop number with thudding, four-on-the-floor beats, clubby synths and repetitions of the hook "Shake your fist for the Russian kiss." It was produced by Richard X.

This is a collaboration with visual artist Bjarne Melgaard, and the video was directed by Richard Kern. It shows lots of same-sex making-out, and while viewers should be advised that there are some risque outfits, there is no full-blown nudity.

Part of the iTunes proceeds go to the advocacy group All Out. The single is supported by Fritt Ord, a foundation that supports freedom of expression. A website for the project has been set up at RussianKiss.org.
