Animalia

"Paradise"

Toronto songwriter Animalia is gearing up to release her sophomore full-length (dissonance) later this year, and she has released a second single in anticipation of the disc's arrival. While the track doesn't officially arrive until January 29, Exclaim! is giving you a chance to take in "Paradise" beforehand.

The weighty, emotional track was written after seeing what she calls "an endless news stream of young people losing their lives through gun violence." With piano beginning as the sole accompaniment to her voice, it doesn't take long for a wash of electronic percussion and synthesizers to arrive, bolstering the composition.

"(dissonance) is the title of the upcoming album, which stems from the concept of believing in two opposing thoughts: a clashing of the positive and the negative, of idealist thoughts and realistic thoughts," she said in a statement. "My writing process for the album was heavily emotional but fast — a purging of ideas and feelings."

Take a listen to "Paradise" before it arrives digitally through Culvert Music on January 29.
