Published Nov 18, 2010When Bristol-via-Berlin performer Anika met Portishead's Geoff Barrow through a mutual friend, it changed her life almost instantly. Bonding over a love of punk, dub and vintage girl groups, Anika entered Barrow's UK studio just one week later and recorded her self-titled debut with Barrow's band Beak>.
Recorded in just 12 days, Anika is described as as "uneasy easy listening... The result of this collaboration is a political/trashy/discordent/reggae/German/old school Bristol/punk-funk sound -- all sown together with a collection of classic songs and a sound of other worldliness," according to the press release, adding that it sounds like "dub without overdubs."
Anika's self-titled release has already been released in Europe via Barrow's Invada Records, but Stones Throw will issue the record on vinyl in North America and Japan on December 7 with an advance digital release sometime this month. For now, a full stream of album track "Yang Yang" is available below, while clips of each song can be heard here.
