Terra Null

The art of ambience and the drone factor lies in the ability to create tension, release and narrative without the familiar infrastructures of song form, meter, pulse etc. Sometimes a work of drone music must carry some other cachet than a chill effect or something to do yoga to. This release by Terra Null succeeds admirably by creating long form works that are based in acoustic and electronic drone pads interspersed with events that pass by in glitch or simply shifts in harmony and melody.

The stories created by reeds, oscillators, cello, guitar effects and voice are ones of patience and resolve, and are solid constructions that carry the music forward. Tracks like "Colonialists" and "Quake" are almost busy in their execution compared to others in this release, but the lack of comfort and resultant tension really puts the question of the function of ambient music to the fore. This is a challenging and satisfying work.
