It's been almost a year since the self-titled debut from Norwegian death metallers Among Gods was digitally released. Now, the album has received a proper physical release via PRC Music. Fronted by Syrach vocalist Ken "Ripper" Olsen and featuring guitarist Broke (ex-Viðr, ex-Arvas), as well as drummer Ivan Rolstad (Vinterbris), Among Gods incorporate the members' different influences into their sound. The album, which clocks in at just over a half-hour, contains elements of doom and black metal, combined with classic death metal, creating a distinct style. Highlights "Crucifixion" and "The Night Procession" lean more towards the doom side of the spectrum, with crushing, mid-paced, groove-y riffs and melancholic growls, while "Martyr" stands out as the black metal track, with some shrieking vocals and melodic, black metal-style guitar work joining forces seamlessly with Among Gods' overarching death vibe. Featuring new cover art, the record is an outstanding debut that makes their follow-up, which is set for a 2013 release, eagerly anticipated.
