Alex Cuba

North By Northeast Toronto ON June 11 to 15

BY Kevin JonesPublished Jun 22, 2008

Armed with only an acoustic guitar and his trademark throwback afro and sideburns, BC resident Alex Cuba put on a stylised and surprisingly rhythmic showcase of soul, rock, and blues-inflected Latin tunes for the mixed crowd of Toronto’s oddly-anointed Tattoo Rock Parlour. The punctuated twang of Cuba’s dynamic guitar work filled the room as the singer jumped around between attitude-rich, upbeat one-man jams and expressive ballads, his Off the Wall-era Michael Jackson mannerisms giving cause to the ’70s ’do. Though half of the spacious venue carried on chatting throughout, the singer’s overt passion for playing proved a pleasant reward for more attentive fans.
