Akron/Family's Dana Janssen Preps Solo Album as Dana Buoy

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Feb 10, 2012

Dana Janssen has spent the last several years playing with psychedelic folksters Akron/Family, but it turns out his inspiration runs deep, as he's just revealed a new solo LP. Taking on the nom de plume Dana Buoy, his upcoming Summer Bodies album will arrive this spring.

A press release explains that the 11-song set, which Lefse Records issues on May 8, has been tinkered with over the course of the last year in a number of locales. The LP's inception allegedly lies in some love notes left on an answering machine in Portland, but Janssen further fleshed out his song sketches in a bungalow near a lagoon in Thailand using a laptop and an MPC. Apparently, the tunes' "tropicore" sound were influenced by Janssen's surroundings, though touches of Afrobeat and synth pop are also said to appear.

Recordings were further tweaked at a Brooklyn studio, with Buoy adding piano, guitar and samples built using omnichords, synths and iPad apps thrown into the mix. You can stream first single "Call to Be" below.

Though we're still several months off from the release of Summer Bodies, the solo artist will be hitting the road next month with his tunes in tow. Considering the album's construction, it's fitting that he will be supporting Youth Lagoon on most dates. Regrettably, no dates are in Canada, but you can check out the schedule below.
